Heraklion

The area had been settled for the first time in Neolithic years and reached its highest development during the time of the Minoan civilization. During this time, big towns were built, the best known being those of Knossos, Festos and Mallia. A period of continuing decadence followed after the 6th century, lasting until the Roman occupation. After this, the history of Heraklion is always closely connected to the history of the whole island. The most important events in younger history were the occupation by the Ottoman Empire, which lasted until 1898 when the island finally gained its freedom, and the unison of Crete with Greece in 1913.

In Heraklion, the visitor can find countless interesting places and sites. Beginning from the old Venetian Harbor and the old city walls, you can continue your walk through the city and visit the many Venetian and Byzantine churches, the museums with their unique objects, ending with a stroll over the loud and colorful street market. In any case, you must take the opportunity of visiting the ancient site of Knossos with its famous Minoan palaces.
